Maintaining the health of your gums with regular Deep Cleanings is the foundation of a healthy mouth
What Is Periodontics?
Periodontics is the dental specialty focused on preventing, diagnosing, and treating diseases of the gums and jawbone that support your teeth. Gum disease (periodontal disease) is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults and affects nearly half of Americans over age 30. At Vista Dental, our Chicago and Skokie periodontists offer comprehensive gum disease treatment including deep cleaning (scaling and root planing), periodontal maintenance, and gum surgery to protect your oral health.
Why Periodontal Treatment Is Important
Periodontal disease is a progressive infection that begins as mild gum inflammation (gingivitis) and can advance to cause jawbone recession and tooth loss if left untreated. Common signs include red, swollen, or bleeding gums, persistent bad breath, receding gums, and loose teeth. However, gum disease can progress without noticeable symptoms, making regular dental check-ups essential for early detection.
There are several reasons why periodontal treatment may be necessary:
Periodontal disease is a progressive condition which begins with mild gum inflammation called gingivitis. It is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults living in the developed world, and should be taken very seriously. Periodontal disease (often called gum disease) is typically signified by red, swollen, painful, or bleeding gums, but in some cases has no noticeable symptoms.
When diagnosed with moderate periodontal problems, our periodontists will cure the underlying bacterial infections on your gums. You will be also advised to follow some home cleaning methods.
Sometimes a deep scaling is needed to remove the bacterial plaque and calculus (tartar) from the teeth and tissues. Where periodontal disease is advanced and the jawbone has regressed significantly, more intensive cleaning may be recommended and loose teeth that cannot be saved will be removed.
Deep Scaling might be required to remove tartar and plaque deposited deep in the gum pockets and surfaces of your teeth. Our specialists will recommend a more intensive cleaning when the infection has advanced in a greater tendency.
Because periodontal disease is progressive, it is essential to remove the bacteria and calculus build up to halt the spread of the infection. Your dentist will be happy to advise you on effective cleaning methods and treatment options.

Deep Cleaning (Scaling and Root Planing)
Deep cleaning, also called scaling and root planing, is the primary treatment for moderate periodontal disease. This two-step procedure involves removing tartar and bacterial plaque from below the gum line (scaling) and smoothing the root surfaces (planing) to help your gums reattach to your teeth. Deep cleaning is more thorough than a regular dental cleaning and is essential for halting the progression of gum disease.
