As a family dentist in Chicago IL, one of the most common questions Dr. Hussain hears is: “How often should I come in?” The standard answer is every six months — but your ideal frequency depends on your individual oral health status, risk factors, and history.
The Every-6-Months Standard (And Why It Works)
Twice-yearly dental visits allow us to: catch cavities in their earliest, most treatable stages; remove tartar buildup that regular brushing and flossing can’t address; screen for gum disease, oral cancer, and other conditions; and update X-rays to monitor what’s happening beneath the surface.
Who May Need More Frequent Visits
Some patients benefit from seeing their dentist every 3–4 months rather than every 6. This includes patients with:
- Active gum disease (periodontitis) or a history of gum disease
- High cavity risk (frequent cavities, dry mouth, high-sugar diet)
- Diabetes (which increases gum disease risk)
- Smoking or tobacco use
- Pregnancy (hormonal changes affect gum health)
- Weakened immune system
- Ongoing orthodontic treatment
Who Might Be Able to Visit Once a Year
Patients with excellent oral health, low cavity risk, and no history of gum disease may be appropriate for annual visits — but this should be determined by your dentist, not assumed.
